Tuesday Night Lights

Hey, while you're waiting for the 2:15 PM non event, pretty interesting meta-moment in blogging last night on the Costas Now show Youtubed here by Awful Announcing.

I've never watched before, but apparently they use the old Geraldo format. It was a live Townhall segment featuring in one corner, Will Leitch of Deadspin fame, acting like (gasp) a normal, intelligent human being. In the other corner is Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger playing the crusty old Luddite hurling ad hominem attacks at blogs and bucket full of expletives (with the completely innoffensive Braylon Edwards in a kind of pointless third corner clearly wondering wtf he was doing there).

Costas clearly mediated with the pro-MSM point of view, but truthfully he couldn't have picked a worse matchup (unless he's an Evil Genius and he is trying to make a pro-blog point). And that all goes on the assumption one is necessarily an alternative to the other, when they can do co-exist and will likely co-exist forever. Or until they next new medium comes along and pushes everything else to the side.

The idea of this segment was apparently to use a broad brush to demonstrate the vile and voyeuristic and disrespectful nature of all things sports blog and to show how it has destroyed our discourse. I've never seen Leitch on TV before, but he comes across about as innoffensive as possible. Bissinger not so much. He calls Leitch full of s*** in his very first sentence and whips out all sorts of material from Deadspin to back up his point. As does Costas.

The amazing thing is, Leitch has written a book and about 4 jillion posts, yet everything they threw in his face and demanded some sort of response for was authored by someone else. Some were just plain offensive comments regarding Sean Salisbury. Yes they were a bit much, but they were Comments. I think a five year old can distinguish between the two.

The other material they threw at Leitch was off regular posts, but they were written by others. And Costas/Bissinger couldn't even bother to get the screen names right (someone who goes by "Big Daddy Drew, refered to there as "Big Daddy Balls") or even the author (AJ Daulerio was credited/scorched for a piece that was not his).

And the ultimate irony is attacking a whole genre for it's lack of civility, training, and writing ability by sandbagging a guy that actually has a journalistic background, and is, believe it or not, civil, and is a talented writer. Not to mention that Deadspin is not a place people actually go to to read how their team did last night. The ostensible purpose of the whole Town Hall after all is to show how we in 2008 consume our sports differently than we did in other eras. Deadspin is basically opinion and comedy. And yes, Athletes Behaving Badly and how that is splashed all over the internet. But not so sure you can blame Deadspin for that either; 99 times out of 100 when they go that route they are linking and opining on someone else's story. And that story is often just from the MSM, like this week's Daily News Clemens fest.

So my unanswerable question to the MSM is, what do you hope to accomplish with diatribes like these? Should blogs have to go through some sort of approval process? Do they really think they can bottle all this up and go to some world where only a Chosen Few can tell us what we can see, and some precious others are deemed qualified enough to opine on what they see? It's not like CNBC for example has a pristine record defining "experts" for me, as Jeff at A Dash of Insight often notes.

To me, it's ultimately a meritocracy, albeit an imperfect one. There are some great blogs that get lousy readership and some lousy ones that top the charts. But by and large, it sorts itself out to the extent that the completely unqualified and irrelevent will have a pretty minor role in the discourse that St. Costas and St. Bissinger so seek to protect.

What a dickhead, this Bissinger.

I respect the guy's Pulitzer. And from what I have heard, his writing ability is excellent. I know women who do not follow football who have read the book (Friday Night Lights) and enjoyed it. And I respect his intelligence in finding a very unique and intriguing story.

But the guy needs to get over himself.

Odessa H.S. football is off the charts nuts, as is Texas H.S. football in general. "Friday Night Lights" was a "Woody Allen" situation for a writer if there ever was one. 80% of the deal was just showing up. The town itself provided most of the effort. Kudos to the guy for finding an interesting situation to write about - but he shouldn't go prancing around like he is the second coming of Shakespeare. As a writer, finding interesting things to write about IS HIS JOB.

Second - Costas, IMO, clearly sees himself as part of the "Chosen Few."

I saw an interview of him once where he described getting "dissed" the first time he met Howard Cosell. Cosell ridiculed him for going on and on about the peculiarities of the infield fly rule during a live broadcast. Costas, I'm sure, thought he was bringing near "divine wisdom" to the Average Joe - who clearly cannot "think" on his level.

What is interesting is that these presumably intelligent men (just going on the Pulitzer and the Emmy awards) are completely missing the transition from "horse and buggy" to automobile here. And the primary reason for this is their arrogance.

The blog sites and the "comments" sections are almost like "cyber bars." Somewhere, in some sports bar, for some reason - someone was looking at a TV screen and calling Salisbury a "#*@!sucking whatever" in real time.

So what do these guys think should happen in such a case? Do you shut down the enire sports bar? Because three or four guys (or maybe even most of the bar patrons) have a "nasty tone?"

Anyway - I would not want to disappoint the blog site expectations of the highly esteemed Emmy winner and his guest, the highly esteemed Pulitzer winner. So I must wrap this up in the following manner ...

"Screw you, man ...!!!"

"Na nana na na !!!"

(there, that should cover the obligatory "nasty tone" ...)

:-)

I guess I can drop F Bombs in the comments section too, lmao.

That sports bar analogy is a good one, hadn't thought of it.

I'm not at all familiar with Bissinger, other than the book, but Costas? Kind of surprised. Some of this started with some anti-blog rant he had a few month's ago. Seems strange, I mean if nothing else he's a very sharp and well informed guy.

And blogs are just a medium, geez. It just seems like "pros" should adapt with or to the medium in some form instead of just lashing out. Where do they think this is all going? Costas even said this all has nothing to do with what he does, so it's clearly just some sort of sympathy with colleagues. But c'mon, it's not going away, nor should it. You're not obligated to read every blog in the world, same way you can choose what TV and radio to listen to.

I think it is sympathy somewhat, but also arrogance - "who do these people think they are to criticize me" type of stuff.

I read a report where NBC anchor Brian Williams was bashing bloggers at NYU

"You're going to be up against people who have an opinion, a modem, and a bathrobe. All of my life, developing credentials to cover my field of work, and now I'm up against a guy named Vinny in an efficiency apartment in the Bronx who hasn't left the efficiency in two years"

This from one of the so-called "brightest minds" in television.

His view of bloggers ...

Always the fictional "Vinny" ...

Always the bathrobe.

Always the studio apt. or the "mother's basement" ...

Wow. How insightful.

And he wonders why I'd rather get some, if not most, of my news from a well run and well informed blog site than from him.

Oh, and I almost forgot ...

Always the mandatory "behavior disorder" ...

(Brian Williams' prototypical blogger not leaving the residence for 2 years, in this case).

Have a nice day.

And remember, it will be another 729 days before you can leave your home. So make sure you have a steady supply of bathrobes. And think about changing your name, too ...

yeah, that's a pretty common sentiment. Just kind of silly and counterproductive, I mean it's just a medium.
